Thoughts of Winter

Dear Friends,

I've collected a few thoughts of winter for you here, along with pictures of some of the beautiful trees (and their friends) around our new place. I hope you enjoy them!

"At Christmas, I no more desire a rose
Than wish a snow in May's newfangled mirth;
But like each thing that in season grows."
-   William Shakespeare

"Green thoughts emerge from some deep source of stillness which the very fact of winter has released."
-   Mirabel Osler

"I frequently tramped eight or ten miles through the deepest snow
to keep an appointment with a beech-tree,
or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance among the pines."
-   Henry David Thoreau

"Have you ever noticed a tree standing naked against the sky,
How beautiful it is?
All its branches are outlined, and in its nakedness
There is a poem, there is a song.
Every leaf is gone and it is waiting for the spring.
When the spring comes, it again fills the tree with
The music of many leaves,
Which in due season fall and are blown away.
And this is the way of life."
-   Krishnamurti

"Dead of winter.
Cold hands warm heart.
As pure as snow.
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.
Now is the winter of our discontent.
Left out in the cold."
~Anonymous

"There’s a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons —
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes —

Heavenly Hurt, it gives us —
We can find no scar,
But internal difference,
Where the Meanings, are —

None may teach it — Any —
’Tis the Seal Despair —
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air —

When it comes, the Landscape listens —
Shadows — hold their breath —
When it goes, ’tis like the Distance
On the look of Death —"
~Emily Dickinson

Marqueta

  2. I must tell you dear one, that winter is really a blessing. We need the rest that it calls for and that precious time spent with our family without the lure of summer or spring.

    Yes...winter is a beautiful season.

Gracias por bendecirnos con tus bellas fotografias...

  7. Dear Marqueta,

I love the trees! Winter does have a way of outlining things for us. I need to get out more here. It's been bitter cold lately, and life just as crazy as ever, but I need to go out anyway!

    Love,
    Lynn

PS -- That one vine sure is thorny! My my. What is it? Looks like a rose, but then it doesn't.

  8. I often photograph and draw trees because they have so much character> In the dead of winter they are intricate silhouettes against a graying sky> Lovely!

  9. You're amazing. You've got such great posts, I have to do a double take and ask myself: "Is this a new post...?" Then I take a closer look at it and then realize I have already seen it. Let me simply say that when I have my "coming out of debt" celebration (which, it seems, might also double as a jolly WEDDING, though I know not exactlty to whom, or when), I'm going to invite you blessed and lovely people. And if it creates all kinds of division (after all, as I have said, it is really going against the grain to become such good friends with Latter Day Saints), too bad! Jesus said he came to bring no less! A sword and division! (I just have to say, it's going to be gutsy stuff, and I'll be hanging on to Christ for dear life!)
