A Snow Day

Dear Friends,

A happy day to you! We are experiencing our first REAL snow day here in Missouri~ The "marshmallow world" kind of snow day, that calls the birds to the feeders, and us to our favorite chairs.

We could never tire of watching the birds that visit our yard:

Female Cardinal

Male Cardinal

Male Cardinal and Dark-sided Junco

Male Cardinal and Carolina Wren (Who have become our new favorite cute birds, along with tufted titmice!) ~

(Birds love the mixture of peanut butter and cornmeal that we smeared on the tree out back.)

We have been learning the names of the new plants that grow nearby, like Winter Creeper Vine~

And finding special rocks that have faces in them (We see a woman nose to nose with a mountain goat)~

And finding ultra-modern birds' nests with Ziploc liners (click image to see better)!

What fun discoveries have you made today?

Love,

Marqueta

 Snowflakes

Out of the bosom of the Air
Out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken,
Over the woodlands brown and bare,
    Over the harvest-fields forsaken,
          Silent, and soft, and slow
          Descends the snow.

Even as our cloudy fancies take
Suddenly shape in some divine expression,
Even as the troubled heart doth make
    In the white countenance confession
          The troubled sky reveals
          The grief it feels.

This is the poem of the air,
    Slowly in silent syllables recorded;
This is the secret of despair,
Long in its cloudy bosom hoarded,
          Now whispered and revealed
          To wood and field.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

  1. Lovely pictures. Cardinals are my favorite bird. It is so nice to look out the back door at the dreary winter sky and see a bright red bird eating just a few feet away.

    Have a wonderful snow day.

  3. Bringing the outdoors in does make it special. I have small pinecones from a hike we did in the fall and a couple from Tenn. Rocks and pebbles from different areas we have been and plants. It makes me happier :)

  4. I love snow days too. Infact we have a big storm coming are way as I type. I also love watching birds at a bird feeder. It is one of my fondest memories of my childhood. Watching birds with my father, and then looking through a bird book to find out what kind they all were. enjoyed you post

  5. Dear Marqueta, I love your pictures! You and I were so on the same wave length today. Pictures of birds, and I took more nature pictures on my walk today! I hope to post them tomorrow.

Your package went out today. Finally. Dearie me, I do hope things slow down here soon! I believe they are and am hoping to breathe a bit more easily now. You'll understand when you get the letter.

Looks like Missouri agrees with your love of nature. Keep posting the nature pictures.

    Love,
    Lynn

  14. What a nice treasure hunt. I've collected a lot of old birds nests, but never seen one insulated with a baggie! Smart little bird, that's what I call "makin do".

  16. Dear Marqueta, How lovely are the pictures! And the birds in the snow... well it just makes the snow have a romantic'y' feel ::blush~blush::
Your new profile picture is so very very precious. We haven't any snow here in Florida, but it is again another very cold and freezing winter again- not as bad as last year's, at least not yet- hoping our temps don't drop too badly any more- it's so hard on the citrus/ strawberry industry down here... and of course on my lil' true Florida bones ((smiles))
I'm so happy to have come by for a visit, I've missed your place.
    Blessings & Happiness,
    Deanna
