Let's Make a Hoop House!

 Dear Friends,

Yesterday was such a nice day, we thought we'd make a little hoop house to plant some spring vegetables.

As you can see, we had lots of help!

We went to the hardware store and bought some pvc pipes and clamps, as well as some organic soil amendment, and thought we'd have it done in an hour or so! :)

We also thought we'd better clean out the old straw from the chicken house, while we were at it!

As the sun descended in the western sky, we put the the plastic sheet on top, and wondered how to keep it from blowing away in the next wind storm! We think we'll order some clamps today, but in the meantime a few bricks and boards seem to be keeping it in place pretty well. Now if we go and find a new home before we can harvest our kale and bok choy, at least we'll know how to put a hoop house together, and how to NOT put one together.

"Mary Mary quite contrary
How does your garden grow?"

Love,

Marqueta

  2. Marqueta,
    That was quite an achievement!
Just think of a the tender young things you will be able to grow in it! ( I don't mean the children..Lol!)
About your last post,I know they 'have their moments', but those photos really encapsulate the sweetest characters ... And I DO mean the children!
You are doing a fine job.

  3. You did a wonderful job building your hoop house!
The weather must be quite warm, as the children are in their bare feet! :)
I use some clamps from my hubby's workshop to hold the plastic in place, that way I can take them off on sunny days and to make watering easier.
    Enjoy your spring veggie garden!

    Blessings!

I use some clamps from my hubby's workshop. It helps to hold the plastic down, but makes it easy to remove on sunny days and to make watering easier.
    Enjoy your spring veggie garden!

  5. That's such a good idea Marqueta! Bet it keeps out the deer too. I'm a bit envious that you are able to go barefoot. We still need our boots!

  6. What a wonderful project! We did the PVC pipe last year with a tarp and it worked so wonderfully for our early crops! :) I am sending a letter your way tonight or tomorrow morning.

  13. A hoop house... that's what I need! I have raised beds. I can do this. Thanks for the inspiration. Of course, I'll check up to see about securing it from a windstorm, I'll definitely have to do that too.

    Blessings, Debbie
